NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS
I know everyone is looking at getting into shape for the New Year and I feel it is my duty as a fitness professional to give some insight on what I feel people should know before they make a life changing decision. I would like to give pros and cons of joining CrossFit opposed to joining a commercial gym. CrossFit can be a bit intimidating at first because people get on the website and see the workouts and think to themselves ?man, I could never do that? or ?these people are crazy. In shape, but crazy.? As a small business owner I do not have a huge budget for marketing. I guess you can consider this a pro or a con. Even though I can not get the word out to millions of people like the commercial gym can, the people who do come in and give the CrossFit program a chance will see and feel results like never before.
Advantages vs. Disadvantages
1. CrossFit does not require you to sign a contract to join. We do month to month. This way you can try it out and if you don?t like it, you simply don?t sign up again the next month.
2. Cost of training. CFTW avg. cost of training is around $6.75 per session opposed to $50/ $80 a session at a commercial gym.
3. If you are looking for proper instruction then CrossFit is the place for you. Don?t go back to the commercial gym and have no clue on what you are doing. This is maybe the #1 reason why people do not see results. If you have no clue on what you are doing, let us help you out. That is what we are here for.
4. No distractions. This can mean many things but when you come to the facility, you are surrounded by other people that are there to get results as well. Listen to their testimonials and see where they once were and how CrossFit got them to where they are.
5. Higher level of training. This is not a jab at anyone but there are trainers out there that plain do not know what they are doing. Come in and talk to me personally. A commercial gym will tell you that their trainer has every certification out there. Well, I got those too. Anyone can pass a test; it?s how you apply that knowledge that counts. Just a little something extra, all those tests are B.S. anyways, you seldom use the things you learn in them. Clients don?t want to know how the blood flows from the heart to the rest of the body; they want to know if you can help them reach their goals fast.
Now I can sit here all day and give pros and cons but ultimately, you are the one that is going to have to make the decision for yourself. I hope 2009 is the year everyone becomes more aware of their bodies and start to help themselves get into better shape. Stop listening entities trying to make a buck off your fitness at the expense of your results. Get into shape by doing a proper training program and start eating correctly; you will be amazed how things start to take care of themselves.

Scott Wells and the CrossFit The Woodlands facility is the only place I will ever train. I wasted thousands of dollars on trainers that wanted to train around my injury. Scott trained me past my injury and I have greater functional movement than I have had in 10 years.

I’m not for or against commercial gyms or crossfit, but i think some of the “pros” you picked are subjective. Some people get distracted anywhere, so the location won’t matter. If you’re focused and ready, then you can train anywhere and will ignore the distractions. As for the “how the blood flows from the heart..”, its not for the clients, but for the trainer to know, so they can be well informed and more effective. That’s the purpose of the exams, although i agree some of them are a joke.

I remember when they interviewed me for the paper and I talked about how people can results anywhere. Usually people are just too damn lazy. You could give it away for free and still, America would be the fattest most unfit nation in the world. Why is that. Are you are trainer??? I would still disagree with you about the blood flow from the heart. I have trained with some really good strength coach’s. I have trained with some other ones that were not so well recognized and they had never had a education. Why is it the ones that did it though experience “not knowing anything about the academical side” were some of the most effective coaches. Funny right. I can look at someone do 3 things and tell if they have been trained properly in strength, range of motion, and neuromuscular efficiency. The squat, deadlift and push up can tell you many things. You should come in for a training session sometime and let me explain into further detail about the program. I 100% believe in what you are saying. People can results anywhere if they are focused. Some people are right, but then again, some are more right than others

Dear DT,
I am sorry, but there is an obvious flaw in your argument. “If you’re focused and ready, then you can train anywhere and will ignore the distractions”. Vince Lombardi said, “Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” In the history of athletics, no individual was able to succeed to their greatest potential without the benefit of a coach helping them practice perfectly. Scott Wells is the quintessential professional coach.
CrossFit does not work without superior coaching, but neither does anything else. Scott Wells is a superior coach compared to what you will find at global gyms.
For all of you reading this that are considering CrossFit for your training needs, you need to understand that at CrossFit The Woodlands you will receive perfect instruction, perfect motivation, and perfect praise. CFTW is the best place for the beginner or the person returning to fitness from an extended time away.
I am just like every other adult out there. I don’t have time or money to waste. My job with Chevron keeps me plenty busy. Furthermore, I have paid for expensive “Globo Gym” trainers that have only managed to hurt me because of their well-meaning, but misguided ignorance. At the end of the day I have found the most knowledgeable instructor at CrossFit The Woodlands.

You are right about being focused and ready , but that’s really the key, isn’t it? Most people can read for themselves what will work in terms of eating healthier and getting in shape. And some may even try these things, for a while. But then what? Why are commercial gyms significantly less crowded just a few months into the year? Resolutions that have worn off, unfortunately. The problem then becomes motivation. Obviously, it would be great if none of us required outside motivation. But it’s plainly evident that different people are motivated by different things. Some folks have old habits that are worse than others. This is where good coaching can play a part. A good coach (trainer, if you prefer), should be able to identify what motivates his/her clients individually. And that’s just not something clients regularly experience at commercial gyms. Scott knows which of his clients need little or no motivation from him, and which ones need a lot. That’s a big difference from the guy at 24 who can’t stop sending text messages long enough to actually pay attention to the client who’s paying for his instruction.

I have never had a daily workout like i get with Scott. I love the fact that I get the workout that leaves me humbled each time I leave his gym. I think the type of motivation he boasts, in addition to the results I see in my fitness, keep me coming back again and again. Although I complain of soreness almost daily, I feel like its worth every IBprophen I take. Fitness is the biggest and most valuable commitment you will ever make to yourself and I feel like I get what Im looking for each workout. Bye for now I need to take some IBphrophen.
